POP Genre Research

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid 1950s. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many styles.

Ed Sheeran - Shape of you

Pop videos usually try to attract teenagers/young adults, and so make the video suitable for their taste. For Example, in Ed Sheeran's Shape of You, we see an interracial couple who are full of life and enjoy doing physical, outdoor activities which bond them together. This includes choreographed dancing and lyrics which all appeal to the audience they are targeting the video to. This in turn, makes the video more interesting and helps gain more attention than a video which teenagers cannot relate to.

In Pop videos, it is common there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. In 'Shape of you' the lyrics read 'I'm in love with the shape of you'. Whilst we hear this, we see two people training in a boxing gym, working on the 'shape' of themselves.

Artist are portrayed as happy, enjoying and content with life. This generally tends to be because the target audience is of a young age, and the image of happiness is most likely to bring back repeat views. The genuine abundance of close ups and medium-shots in this music video shows how personal we are allowed to become with artists, and so the audience of pop music.
